Bringing history to life

When Mike "Blue Hawk" Adams dons buckskin clothes and straps on homemade knives, he’s not longing to have been born 300 years earlier.
The bearded fan of the muzzleloading "heyday" aims only to remind folks of an important time in America’s history when men and women learned to survive in the wilderness. Later, those toting black powder weapons helped win independence from the British and shaped the early days of the United States.
"It’s important that everybody know their own history. If you don’t, you’re doomed and you have no ability to go forward," he said Saturday.
A living-history educator who presents and teaches all over the nation, Adams, 60, of New Albany in southeast Kansas, presided Saturday over the Kansas Muzzleloading Association’s 29th annual convention at the Ramada/Salina Ambassador Conference Center.
The event that has attracted about 300 KMA members and visitors, continues from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the climate-controlled conference center and features demonstrations, seminars and a large Vendor & Trade Room. The the old-style firearms, furs and many items are for sale from the muzzleloading period of 1654 to 1890.
